M50 upgrade completed – Wallace
5th September 2010
The completed 32km M50 Upgrade scheme has transformed the M50 from a two-lane heavily congested road with toll barriers and signaled interchanges into a modern free-flowing motorway that has reduced journey times by up to 50%.
Deputy Wallace stated “This is a hugely significant & positive infrastructural investment for the surrounding area and will hugely improve the quality of life for commuters using this junction. Previously traffic congestion at the junction of N3/M50 meant long delays especially in the morning and evening traffic adding at least 30 minutes to the journey of commuters not to speak of the stress and hassle of sitting in such a traffic jam each day while trying to get to/from college/work.
Deputy Wallace added “Five years ago we published the new interchange proposals/maps in our newsletter to all homes in the Dunshaughlin area and there was a huge positive response to the plans. Today we welcome the finished product and to the engineers involved I would have to say Thank you so much - the plans did look great and the result is a dream come true for motorists who are dealing daily with this route to work. Well done on an excellent job finished ahead of time. ” Deputy Wallace concluded.
The upgraded M50 has resulted in shorter, more reliable and safer journeys that improve commuters’ quality of life, increase efficiency for businesses and help greater Dublin area to be more competitive in order to attract more foreign inward investment. The one billion euro project was carried out over four and a half years, in the midst of 100,000 moving vehicles per day and was completed four months ahead of schedule. The final section of the upgraded M50 Motorway, the new and improved M3 Interchange, was opened to traffic on Wednesday 1st September.
