Wallace welcomes funding for Rural Transport Programme
Minister Mary Wallace TD warmly welcomes additional funding of €2 million for the Rural Transport Programme (RTP). This brings to €11 million the total 2008 allocation for the Rural Transport Programme.
Minister Wallace stated “The RTP is a national programme specifically aimed at people in rural areas who are excluded or may become excluded because transport is not available, accessible or affordable to them locally”
Minister Wallace was instrumental in establishing the Rural Transport Project in Meath when she was Minister of State for people with disabilities. During that time the Minister commenced a pilot programme in Meath and Mayo and the outcome of that pilot project was to roll out Flexibus on a national basis.
“There are currently 34 projects in operation nationally. Flexibus – Meath Accessible Transport Project, is the Community Transport group operating in the Meath area”.
“Flexi-bus provide accessible and affordable local transport which makes a huge difference to the quality of life of many living in rural parts of Meath. People can feel cut off from wider community life and can have serious difficulty accessing basic services if they live in a particularly rural area without ready access to transport. This is especially true of older people and those with disabilities”
“Flexibus run lots of services on a daily, weekly, fortnightly and monthly basis. These services operate all over the County. They provide services using their fleet of buses and private operators to older people, young people, parents with children, people with disabilities and Community Groups. I would like to congratulate everyone at Flexi-bus on the excellent services they provide for people in our rural communities” she concluded
Flexibus operates a service throughout Meath and beyond. Some of the areas covered include Tierworker, Moynalty, Drumconrath, Ballinacree, Oldcastle, Moylagh, Athboy, Wilkinstown, Trim, Navan, Ballivor, Summerhill, Baconstown, D’rath, Carrickmacross, Woodtown, Lobinstown, Kingscourt, Longwood, Bohermeen, Munsterconnaught, Virginia, Clonmellon, Enfield, Beauparc, Knockbride, Bailieboro, Barleyhhill, Slane, Kilmainhamwood, Mull, Yellow Furze, Kingscourt, Dunshaughlin, Skryne, Kiltale, Grange, Ratoath, Kilmessan, Bective, and Scurloughstown.
